In the early 1980s I was the owner of one of the original galleries that was fortunate enough to exhibit and sell Patrick Nagle’s work.  Our first Patrick Nagel show was in 1983 at our gallery at that time, Scattivodd Fine Art in Sausalito, California.

Of note is that the gallery itself was listed on the commemorative #6 poster in 1985.

Recently, I have been revisiting the art of Patrick Nagel due to the fact that Patrick’s work has become very collectible. In fact, his major paintings now sell for over $300,000

We will be offering select pieces of Patrick’s work that have been in the vault for over 30 years.

The Nagel commemorative series of posters published from 1984 – 1990 by Mirage Editions were of the highest quality. The silkscreen technique was flourishing in LA at the studio that printed Patrick’s editions. When you look at the quality of the image as well as the process, you see a group of truly exceptional artwork.

The pieces being offered for sale here are from my personal collection and are in pristine, mint condition.

We hope that you enjoy looking back at this very creative time in the early 80s.

Nagel

Patrick Nagel is known for his paintings, prints, sculptures, posters and overall craftsmanship during the 1970s and 80s. His style is immediately recognizable due to his personal ideal of the image of women. When one thinks of the artwork of Patrick Nagel, one envisions the depictions of women who are strong yet vulnerable, in the present yet aloof, elegant yet a little on the edge. It is for these reasons that his artwork appeared in Playboy and Architectural Digest magazines as well as gracing the cover of a Duran Duran 1983 album. Because he was attracted to Japanese woodblock prints and their precision, his work also entails a simple form of exactitude.

Nagel was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1945 but was raised in the Los Angeles, California area. His education entailed studying fine art at Chouinard Art Institute and at California State University, Fullerton, for which he received a BA in fine arts in 1969 in painting and graphic design. He began his art career by teaching at the Art Center College of Design. As his work in the art world progressed, he ultimately created his own niche in the illustrative arena.

Just like his artwork, Patrick Nagel, the man, was intriguing: he was stylish, elegant and quiet yet at the same time created his own entertainment by drinking, smoking, enjoying fast food and staying up all night. Before his premature death at the age of 38 in 1984, he was able to make his mark in the art world in that one can find his artwork in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, and the Musee de L’Affiche in Paris.
